很多看似毫不相干的單詞能被分類討論區別，是因為它們在某些方面會讓人產生混淆，常見的由發音、拼寫或意思等方面，如 bear 和 bare，material 和 materiel 等，還有類似于今天的主角 convenient，proper 和 appropriate，等等。

這三個單詞，它們都有「方便的，合適的」的意思，因此有的時候會被混淆，然而它們實際的用法還是有區別的：

一、convenient

英文解釋：useful， easy or quick to do； not causing problems

Convenient，指對某人來說很方便的，能省時省力省事的，意為「方便的，合宜的」等，例如：

What time would it be convenient for me to come over？

我什麼時候過來合適？

I find it convenient to use QR Code for payment.

我發現使用二維碼付款很方便。

二、proper

英文解釋：right， appropriate or correct； according to the rules

Proper，指正確恰當的，側重于符合某種標準或習慣，用于此義時只作定語，意為「合適的，恰當的」等，例如：

Make sure that everything is in its proper place.

務必把每樣東西都放在恰當的位置。

I would have done the job myself but I didn‘t have the proper equipment.

我本來可以自己做的，但我沒有合適的設備。

三、appropriate

英文解釋：suitable， acceptable or correct for the particular circumstances

Appropriate，指適合某一時間、情況、目的等的，常后接介詞 for/to，意為「合適的」，例如：

Now that the problem has been identified， appropriate action can be taken.

現在既已找出問題的癥結，即可采取適當行動。

Is this film appropriate for small children？

這部電影適合小孩子看嗎？

四、三者的區別

1. 首先從英文解釋上，我們可以很好把 convenient 與 proper 和 appropriate 區分開來，convenient 表示方便快捷，而 proper 和 appropriate 帶有更多的感情色彩。

2. Proper 指正確恰當的，而 appropriate 指適合某個情況，沒有過多地強調正確與否，因此它后面常接 for/to 來引出具體的時間、情況或目的，例如：

That isn‘t the proper way to say that.

這樣說不恰當。

That dress isn‘t appropriate for a wedding.

那件衣服不適合在婚禮上穿。

第一句中的 proper 指這是不對的，或者它可能太不正式或太俚語化了，而第二句中的 appropriate 指不合適，但沒有包含對錯的味道，因此相比來說 proper 更具感情色彩。

3. 作此義時，proper 一般只作前置定語，而 convenient 和 appropriate 還可以作表語，例如：

We should have had a proper discussion before voting.

我們本應在表決之前好好討論一下才是。

It is very convenient to pay by credit card.

用信用卡付款非常方便。

Jeans are not appropriate for a formal party.

正式聚會上穿牛仔褲不合適。

總的來說，proper 用起來感覺比較拘謹，而 convenient 用起來最順心，appropriate 的使用在具體的場合中更突出。
